The 92nd Monte Carlo Rally 2024 retains its traditional place on the 2024 wrc calendar as the first round of the 2024 World Rally Championship.
Due to major works in Monaco, the Automobile Club de Monaco announced they could not secure the space needed for the Service Park and related infrastructure. The Rally is, therefore, to return to Gap in the Hautes-Alpes department of France which hosted the rally from 2014 to 2021 and the birthplace of 8 times WRC Champion, Sebastian Ogier. However, as with the last 2 years, the start and finish ceremony will still take place outside the iconic Monte Carlo Casino.
Last year saw a new version of the famous Col de Turini stage ran 3 times. With the rally being furhter north this year, the stage is only used the once as the Wolf Power Stage, on the way back to Monte Carlo for the finishing ceremony. Overall the route is very different to the 2023 Monte Carlo Rally
The 2024 Monte Carlo Rally marks the first time the WRC2 (P2) drivers will be allowed to use Gravel Crews. Many P2 drivers have been pushing for this change on safety grounds due to the highly changeable conditions, especially on the Monte. Andreas Mikelson has been particularly vocal on the matter and pushed hard for the second tier drivers to have access to the information provided by them.
Oliver Solberg was in favour of the FIA decision. He said: “It has to be safety first, every time. This seems to be a simple decision, but we have to be grateful to the FIA for taking the initiative and making this happen on Tarmac.”
The Monte Carlo Rally 2024 is one of the most exiting rallies of the season. It is the first rally of the championship, starts in darkness and heads high into the mountains into often highly unpredictable conditions where relatively straightforward asphalt roads in the French Alps are complicated by winter weather. With most stages climbing and / or ascending the areas cols the aspect and height of the road along with the time of day can make a large difference to the stage, even between morning and afternoon passes. Northerly facing slopes tend to remain very icy, with the southern facing slopes thawing providing more grip.
Stage conditions can vary dramatically at each starting point and throughout the stage with dry tarmac, wet tarmac, snow, and ice, sometimes present in a single stage). Because of all these factors this event places a big emphasis on tyre choice and strategy, the team must balance the need for grip on ice and snow with that on dry and wet tarmac.
