Rally Deutschland is held on differing styles of asphalt surfaces.
The vineyard stages consist of tight twisting roads, with short straights and hairpins in the steep mountains surrounding the Moselle. Access to excellent viewing with close proximity to the cars is possible, sitting on small walls and in between the vines. Care must be taken to keep to safe places and not jepordise the running of the rally.
The roads of Panzerplatte or armour flat, a military training ground near Baumholder are made of rough concrete. Many drivers have been caught out by the by the dangerous “Hinkelstones”, large blocks up to a meter in size lining either side the roads as a restraint for military vehicles. The stages are fast with long viewing areas, including the legendary crest known as “Gina”. On this terrain small driving-errors almost automatically lead to serious damage to both car and driver, Petter Solberg had a huge crash here in 2004 and was lucky to emerge unscated.
Finally, the asphalt roads in the rural northern Saarland are very fast with high-speed curves, only interrupted by some tight turns onto smaller roads.
